要約: Third stage larvae of the rhinoceros beetle, Xyloryctes Jamaicensis Drury (Coleoptcra, Scarabaeidae), were abundant during autumn 1981 in litter and upper soil horizons of a bur oak-hackberry forest near Manhattan, Kansas. Densities of larvae ranged from 0 to 3.7 individuals/m2 within forest transects, while amounts of fecal pellets of these larvae ranged from 28.2 to 463.1 g/m2 along these same transects. No third stage larvae were present the following autumn, suggesting that the population is dominated by a particular brood. Fecal pellets exhibited slow decay rates (l0%/yr), and the amount of pellets on the forest Boor represents the relative abundance of several generations of larvae.

The rhinoceros beetle, Xyloryctes jamaicensis Drury, is reported to be a locally abundant scarab in cenain northeastern deciduous forests, and has been observed as far west as Arizona (Ritcher, 1966). The larvae feed on rotting wood and well
decayed litter, although Borror et al. (1976) stated that the larvae also feed on roots. Reports of this species in Kansas are limited Several specimens from RileyCounty, Kansas, are housed in the Kausas State Entomology Museum, but no specimens from Kansas are contained in the Snow Entomological Museum at the University of Kansas (W. Morrow, pers. comm). The large size of the adults (about 25 mm), along with the conspicuous "horn" of the male, makes this insect attractive to collectors. Thus, this insect was probably uncommon in the riparian forests of eastern Kansas.

A population of larvae of X. jamaicensis was discovered during a preliminary survey of forest floor detritivores of Kansas riparian forests. This report documents densities of larvae, as well as the amount and decomposition rate of larval fecal pellets found on the forest floor.

Methods

Sampling was conducted in bur oak-hackberry forests in the Kings Creek drainage of Konza Prairie Research Natural Area, about 22 km south of Manhattan, Kansas. The composition and extent of these riparian forests have been described
by Gurtz et al. (1982). Larvae were censused in October 1981 by sieving litter and humus taken from 0.25 m2 quadrats at sites selected randomly along 5 transects. Larvae obtained during sieving were taken to the laboratory and fed various types of decaying plant materials (senescent leaves, decaying wood and humus) to ascertain food habits.

はじめまして、最高に面白いブログですね!特に餌や成虫が何を食べるかなどまで追求されていて、日本の飼育者の一人としては大変興味があります。現地でどのように生活しているかを知りたいですが中々難しいので。これからも頑張ってください!
