• 2015-6-21。mdr。プール。午後９時頃。
• プールの水中照明に引き寄せられて水面に落下したものが多数みかけるようになった。プールサイドには芝生。ジャクージに落下したものでもしばらくは生きているが朝までには茹で上がってしまうので午後８時以降一時間おきに見回りする必要あり。
• Charles L. Hogue博士は著書”INSECTS OF THE LOS ANGELES BASIN"の中でC. hirtaをHairy Cyclocephalaと呼び、"They are medium-sized (the body length is 1/2 in., or 13mm) and pale tan, some with fine specks or lines along the back."　中型。体長1/2inchあるいは13mm。茶褐色。くっきりした点や背中に沿った線が見られる場合もある、と記述。
• 動画撮影すること。
• カリフォルニア州のコガネカブトでこれまでに見つけたことのあるものは、Cyclocephala hirtaあるいはC. pasadenaeのどちらか、それにC. longulaとC. melanocephala。今後は、 C. pilosicollisとC. wandaeを探すこと。
• 2015-6-27。mdr。数日間は数匹ずつ見つけていたのに本日は０。雨まじりで気温も低め（午後９時：72F/62%）。
• 一見よく似た日本のナガチャコガネはコフキコガネ亜科。本種はカブトムシ亜科。
• 2015-7-3。74F/69% ここ数日ほど２〜３匹のペースで採集。プールに落下し漂ったまま早朝を迎えるパターンなので実際のところは何時頃飛んでいるのかは不明。ここ数日の傾向としては午後10頃見に行ってもいない場合が多くそのかわり午前５時頃に見つかるのでかなり遅い時間に飛び回るのかそれともさらに早朝たとえば４時頃に飛び始めるのかそのあたりはわからない。
• りんごの皮で数日は生きる。
• 2015-7-14。２週間連続で毎晩数匹ずつ採集できていたが、本日は０。
• Western masked chafer
• Cyclocephala hirta LeConte, 1861
• Art Evans博士によれば、Cyclocephala hirtaとC. pasadenaeの違いは体毛の量。前者より後者が体毛が少ない。
• 死後数日で褐色化してしまう。
• 写真の”雌”は、交尾していたため性別が判明。腹部に卵が透けて見える。
• 本種を飼育する予定はないが、もしも飼育するならブルーベリーの苗木を植えた鉢に網をかけたものを用意することになる。
• 2015-7-22。早朝にプールで三匹。今月に入って見つけられない日もたまにはあるがほぼ毎日このペース。午後10時頃には確認できなくても、翌日早朝には浮いているので、カブトムシとは異なり活動時間が遅い。ジャクージに落ちているものは煮え上がった状態で発見されることもしばしば。
• 標本作りにおいて、ハガロンは本種の前脚の軟化にもかなり効果があるもののの成功率100％というわけではない。どうにも頑固な前脚もある。一方、触覚は軟化しすぎる傾向があってかたちを作りにくいし、飛び出してしまった後翅は軟化しても前翅の下に戻すことができなかった。
• 2015-7-29　０匹。6月中旬から７月一杯と言われているが、そろそろシーズン終了か。

"Masked chafers of the genus Cyclocephala are restricted to the New World, with 250 species known primarily from the tropics.  The name “masked chafer” is derived from the fact that some species have a dark band connecting the eyes. Five species in California are distributed throughout the coastal plains, valleys, foothills,and deserts in summer. Cyclocephala hirta (10.5 to 14.0 mm) is yellowish brown with short hairs scattered over its body and is the only California species with a “bead,” or lip, along the posterior margin of the pronotum.  It is often encountered in large numbers on summer nights, swarming over grassy areas at dusk or attracted to lights at night.  A slightly darker, less hairy species, C. pasadenae (12.0 to 14.0 mm) (pl. 74) is also widespread and common in residential areas.  Cyclocephala longula (11.0to 14.3mm)is a bit more slender than the previous species, and its head and pronotum are slightly darker than the elytra.  This species is more common in the deserts and surrounding foothills.  Another species,distinctly bicolored, C. melanocephala (10.6 to 15.0 mm), is occasionally found at lights but is more often found deep inside the flowers of Iimson weed (Datura).  The elytra are pale yellowish brown, but the head and pronotum are dark reddish brown to black.  It is distributed from the south western United States to Argentina."

• LTに飛来。
• 周辺で見られる木はCreosote bush（Larrea tridentata）とJoshua Tree (Yucca brevifolia)がほとんどで背の低いMesquite Treeがポツポツ見られる程度。極端に乾燥している朽木ばかりだったが、穴が無数に空いているものも見た記憶あり。次回はそうした朽木も撮影すること。
• 次回は、採集時点で大まかにでも選別して個別ケース（コガネカブト、カンショコガネ、クチキムシ）に入れていくこと。残りは一つのケースに移し、部屋に戻ってからじっくり選別。使い捨てゴム手袋を忘れないこと。
• 近所の金物屋で買った電動虫吸引器はパワー不足と吸い込んだ虫を受け止める機能が無かった。代替品入手につき要検討。
• 肝心の”Comb-clawed”と形容される部分が撮影出来ず。次回は生存中に撮影。動画撮影も。
• クチキムシ科とする資料とゴミムシダマシ科クチキムシ亜科とする資料を読み比べ。
• 朽木虫。

• 2015-6-22。brc。テニスコートのベンチ脇。隣には予約利用制の芝生エリア。夜間照明あり。
• 強い日差しに数日あたっていたためか、全体に濃い褐色。
• wrでltしてみれば同種のものが見つかるか。バケツのおさまるバックパックかトートバックを探すこと。

ゴミムシダマシ（Tenebrionidae科）Darkling Beetle

• 2015-6-11。dvnp。sc。
• pickleweedが生い茂り、地表には塩がふく。小動物に食べられて排出された状態。
• この一帯で確認出来た虫は、イトトンボとアブだが、おそらくゴミムシダマシもいるのだろう。
• 次回はpftを試す。

• 簡易ライトトラップ成功。
• あの場所で可能性ある食葉はメスキート以外考えにくいが、次回は齧られたあとのある葉を探してみること。とはいえ、本年同様ガラガラヘビに要注意。
• 食葉コガネムシ
• 日本産コガネムシは８亜科。北米産の亜科の数についても要確認（９つあるように見えるけれど）。
• カンショコガネ族の権威であるPatricia Vaurieについても要リサーチ。
• 次回は素早く仕分けて、動画撮影すること。
• 赤いものはDiplotaxis frondicolaのようにも見えるが、その分布は東海岸からテキサス州までとある。

• 2015-6-9。mnp。cr。Desert Marigold（キク科コウオウソウ属）。
• 日の出日の入りどちらの時間帯でも見つけることが出来たが、はたして100度を超える日中でも同じ場所にいるのだろうか（暑いし、あまり行きたくないけど）。加えて、花から花へ飛び回る様子をいまだ一度も確認出来ていない。次回の課題。
• 2015-6-13。Desert Marigoldのプランターをネット・ケージに移動。二匹放虫。明朝様子を確認すること。
• 本種についてはカナダのタマムシ・フィールドガイドにも詳細な記載が無かった。
